Jim Presses For Solutions To Ward Problems
As parking problems continue to dog local residents in Hillfields, Councillor Jim O’Boyle has met with Council officials to try to find a way forward to easing some of the worst of the problems in the area. Money from various planning approvals in the area is also available to spend on potential projects such as the City Farm, a much loved and well used community resource before its sad closure in 2008.Jim said: “I have a petition in the council at the moment from residents in Hillfields asking that the Council tackle the issue of parking in residential streets which is blighting my constituent’s lives. I have asked for a report to be written to look at how we can best tackle the problem and at the same time use resources to reinvigorate the City Farm and bring it back to life. I feel sure this is possible and I am very supportive of resident’s ideas on these two subjects.
“I have also suggested that we force University Authorities to keep to their word that students who live in new halls of residence in the heart of our community don’t bring cars to clog up residential roads. At the moment, these promises are not kept. That’s why I’ve suggested that any residents parking scheme would deliberately exclude purpose built student accommodation and its residents. There are purpose built car parks in the area for this exact purpose lying empty! They need to give locals a break and this is one possible way to do it.
“I have also asked officers to look at other possible solutions such as minor restrictions which would make it very difficult for non residents to leave their cars blocking residential streets all day long. It may be possible to look at restricting other types of non residents. We need a holistic approach to this problem which is why I have also asked for work to be done to tackle city centre parking which has a knock on effect into areas such as Hillfields. I will continue to press the council to take the necessary action.”
