'Decisive Action' Needed To Tackle Metal Theft Says Councillor
Coventry City councillor, Ed Ruane said moves are now needed to bring the situation under control giving the Police and local councils more powers to act. Cllr. Ruane accused the government of being far too slow to act, asserting that a much tougher licensing regime was now needed for scrap metal dealers. Cllr.Ruane (Lab, Henley) said: “Metal theft is becoming an epidemic and urgent action is needed from the Home Office to stop this getting out of control.” “It is still too easy to trade stolen metal. We need a much tougher licensing regime for dealers, including requiring people selling to scrap metal dealers to prove their identity, and stronger powers for the police to investigate.” “When cases are becoming increasingly serious, the Home Office shouldn't turn a blind eye or just leave it to the police,” he added. “We need action.” The Moon? Or A Coventry Road‘One small step for man, one giant leap for the Council to fix our roads!’
Following recent news that President Barack Obama has ditched all human flights to the moon, it was a surprise to see an American astronaut mistakenly land on Woodway Lane having confused the state of the road with the surface of the moon, due to the large number of craters on the road.
Local residents claim it is bumpiest road in Coventry and resembles the surface of the moon.
Cllr. Kevin Maton (Lab, Henley) said: “Woodway Lane is in a shocking condition and is very dangerous to drive on due to the number and size of craters in the road. This is a serious issue which has been reported to the Council time again by local residents and myself, the Council has become a joke in their inability to repair our road network.”
“Many motorists in Coventry have become used to swerving in out of the potholes in the road to prevent repeated damage to their tyres and suspension, this sort of driving will inevitably lead to accidents.”
Cllr. Ed Ruane (Lab, Henley) said: “It would be safer to drive a moon buggy down Woodway Lane and many other roads in our city which have more similarities with the surface of the moon than a city road.”
“There needs to be an urgent review of road maintenance in the city, as Coventry is clearly struggling to cope with the worst potholes, we can’t go on like this if we are genuinely serious about attracting new businesses to our city.”
Is Woodway Lane the worst in the city? Or do you have another candidate? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Bob Condemns Government’S EMA U-Turn
The news comes as thousands of students around the country protested for the second time in as many weeks as part of a rally to demonstrate the strength of feeling against the plans for EMA and tuition fees.
Introduced by Labour in 2004, the scheme was axed by Michael Gove in the Spending Review last month. This was despite promises by David Cameron and Nick Clegg before the election that the payments would be safe.
Almost 5,000 young people in Coventry depend on the payments to help with basics such as transport and books. Now the payments are being axed from next year, many could find it hard to make ends meet and choose not to continue their education.
Independent studies had shown that the payments increased the number of students remaining in education who would not have done so without the financial incentive, as well as raising attainment amongst disadvantaged young people.
Bob said thousands of young people in Coventry have been betrayed by the Coalition Government’s decision to scrap the Education Maintenance Allowance.
“Before the election, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats said they would keep EMA payments – now they have betrayed young people by going back on their promises and scrapping them.
“I’m appalled that David Cameron has gone back on his pre-election promise to protect the payments; I think he owes the young people of this country an explanation.
“I want to see all young people staying on at school, going to college, getting an apprenticeship or doing some form of training while at work. That’s why Labour introduced EMA, and axing it could mean thousands of students failing to reach their full potential.”
