£20m "Wasted" in Coventry in BSF cancellation

lynnette£20 million expenditure on Coventry's schools has been wasted by Michaels Gove's cancellation of the Building Schools for the future, according to Cllr Lynnette Kelly, Coventry's Cabinet Member for Education.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's "You and Yours" programme, Lynnette said that spending by the Council, contractors and schools on preparations for building and refurbishing Coventry schools had totalled £20m

On the very morning Michael Gove made his announcement, Westwood School staff and students had been working on the final details for the refurbishment of their buildings, only to be told in the afternoon that it had all been in vain.

Lynnette told us she was both disappointed and angry. "The decision to axe the BSF programme has wasted £20m that was intended to give Coventry children a better education. Now it's been snatched away from them. I'm angry on behalf of the staff and students across the city, who have put so much into this. And disappointed that contractors have lost out, with th resulting loss of jobs."

Many of Coventry's schools were built in the 1960's and are coming to the end of their lives. The city's BSF programme would have seen 20 of them either refurbished or completely rebuilt.

Our New Leadership Contest Site Launched

To help Labour members and supporters to discuss the Labour Party's leadership contest, we've launched a new section of our website devoted to the contest.

We've pulled together articles from some of the best Labour blogs and news websites, together with Twitter feeds from all the candidates.

We're also providing a messageboard for you to discuss the relative merits of Diane, Andy, Ed, and the Miliband brothers, as well as the future direction of the Labour Party. You can also find out what the important dates are in the whole procedure.

As the site develops, we'll also be adding links to each of their websites and to their statements on the national Labour Party website.

This is possibly the most important period for the Labour Party for many years, and we think members (and others) should have the best opportunity to discuss the way forward for the Party.

So if you want a "one-stop" source of information on the contest, and to discuss it with others, take a look at the site!

And don't forget to tell us what you think!

Five Reasons To Vote Labour

1. Experience and Judgement

Labour's team led Britain from recession to recovery

The Tory Risk ...

Risk handing power to an inexperienced, unchanged Tory party that got every call on the recession wrong, and would hit every family with a £1,500 bill to pay for their election giveaways - starting with their emergency budget in June

2. Securing the Recovery

Labour will continue to support the economy to secure the recovery, and give a training or job guarantee to all 18-20 year olds out of work for six months

The Tory Risk ...

The Tories' immediate cuts which would wreck the economic recovery, risking people's jobs and living standards

3. Protecting Public Services

Labour will protect the free child care, tax credits and public services you rely on like schools, hospitals and policing.

The Tory Risk ...

The Tories and Lib Dems would cut Child Tex Credits and the Child Trust Fund for families on modest and middle incomes.

The Tories have written to nursery providers promising them they would allow them to charge a top-up fee.

4. Helping Families Get On, Not Just Get By

With Labour: tax credits will be increased, not cut

The Tory Risk ...

Risk the Tories who choose to waste millions on a tax giveaway worth a huge £200,000 for each of the 3,000 wealthiest estates in Britain, whilst cutting support for families.

5. The Cancer Guarantee

With Labour, all patients are guaranteed to se a cancer specialist within two weeks of a GP referral and all cancer tests will be completed and the results received within just one week.

The Tory Risk ...

Risk the Tories scrapping your two-week cancer referral guarantee, and Labour's new guarantee of test results in one week

Thinking of voting Lib Dem? Think again:

1. They want an amnesty for illegal immigrants, even though it would encourage more illegal immigration

2. Like the Tories, they would cut Child Tax Credits and Child Trust Funds.

3. They would restrict the use of DNA evidence, making it harder for police to catch and convict criminals.

4. Vote Lib Dem, Get Tory: Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg won't rule out backing the Tories in a hung Parliament.
